With a new edition of the tradeshow almost starting, Maison et Objet elects the Designer of the Year – Cecilie Manz. The fair has chosen this talented creator because of her creative work and innovative pieces and designs!

Cecilie remembers her old days of youth where she went to her parent’s ceramic studio and dug her hands into the clay. In 1997, she earned her diploma in Object and Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Then she moved to Finland to continue her education at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. just one year later she was able to found her own studio in the lands of Copenhagen.
The balance between civilization and nature is crucial to her creative process, she says. Also, her relations with family and friends contribute in a big way to her creativity. In 2014, she won the Crown Prince Couple’s Culture Award, presented by Prince and Princess of Denmark themselves, one of the highest points of her career. Today she is recognized as one of the major figures of the Scandinavian Design, a process that took a long time.
She has a huge taste for experimenting new materials and exploring original functions. Whenever she is creating the process is always different. She is described by the fair organizers as an “advocate of warm minimalism“. Cecilie has become famous for her ability to create colourful pieces that are able to incorporate into the Scandinavian Style.
“More than a style, the Scandinavian approach she defends – which is too often distorted in her opinion – ‘should reflect the actual lifestyle of these countries'”, said Maison et Objet. “In her work, this is often achieved through subtle play on shades of grey associated with brighter colours.”
“Colour is a fundamental element in her creative process and she always develops a specific palette in the earliest stages of each project, because it is a way to assert the product’s identity,” the organisers continued. “Her Scandinavian heritage is also self-evident in her effort to strip her creations of any superfluous element, focusing on the essential, oblivious to the fact that her ceaseless pursuit of uncluttered lines presents a new challenge every time.”
Maison et Objet nominated her as Designer of the Year for both January and September edition of the tradeshow. At the fair, the chosen designer showcases their work in a space entirely designed by and dedicated to them.
