The Los Angeles studio known as Commune Design made an incredible job in the latest addition to the Ace Hotel chain, the one in Chicago. The boutique hotel has been completed in Chicago’s West Loop, a neighborhood well-known for its incredible good taste when it comes to trendy design. The 159-room hotel is made by a collection of different buildings, with lots of space for hosting events, as well as a rooftop bar and lounge to enjoy the incredible Chicago sunsets.
GREC Architects firm completed the structure on the 6th floor. This company had previously worked on Ace’s downtown LA location. Commune was also involved with the design for the LA outpost.
The design project still preserves the facade of the old Fulton Market cheese factory on the south side of the building. The building features a mix of old and new. Ace Hotel describes the project as “the spirit of the New Bauhaus in Chicago”. The interiors are inspired by the mid-western craftsmanship and utilitarian design.
The entire decor has references from the mid-century design, with pops of yellow, pink, green and blue. Colors that are available to create vibrancy and bring warmth to the clean and simple room decor. The designs celebrate the work of modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, that is famously associated with the city of Chicago.
Rooms feature some built-in pieces of plywood another incredible designs originally made at the Bahaus school in the 30s, where Rohe served as its last director.
Every room also features a unique and mesmerizing piece of art made by a student from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The city’s Volume Gallery is also featured in the project with a series of works.
This outstanding mid-century modern design project brings the best of the Chicago city culminating it in just one place.
